The Kansas Town Built for Slaves Who Dared Dream
Along the banks of the Missouri River, there is a cluster of ruins that offer a powerful example of the human spirit’s determination and ability to transcend injustice. The Quindaro Ruins are the remains of a Kansas town established in 1856 by New England abolitionists who provided assistance for slaves in Missouri looking to escape to freedom in Kansas. But, the Missouri River separated the enslaved from Quindaro. Trish Schurkamp of the Wyandotte County Historical Society shares the compelling history of Quindaro.
