Arkansas Separates MLK Holiday and Robert E. Lee Recognition
And, then there were two. The state of Arkansas, led by its Republican Governor, Asa Hutchinson, passed legislation separating the Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday from an observance of Robert E. Lee, leaving only Alabama and Mississippi to celebrate MLK and Lee on the same day in January.
Rev. Arthur Hunt is arguably the most committed voice in the years-long effort to give Dr. King exclusive honor. In the days leading up to a vote in the Arkansas legislature, Rev. Hunt joined TheVillageCelebration’s Vickie Newton to talk about the reasons Arkansas needed to “do the right thing.”
