Kansas City Kicks Off Juneteenth Holiday With A Parade
Kansas City’s historic entertainment and cultural district hosted an early Juneteenth celebration over the weekend.
Several hundred people lined the parade route along 18th and Vine with some gathering hours beforehand to secure a spot on the sidewalk for their stadium seats. Others stood ready with cellphones to record the drill teams and excitement marking the upcoming federal holiday.
Mel Ligon expressed the opinion of millions of Black Americans when he said, “It’s about time.”
President Joe Biden signed a bill on June 17, 2021, establishing Juneteenth which commemorates the end of slavery, as a federal holiday. It was the first federal holiday since Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday was designated a federal holiday in 1983.
Ligon added, “It represents our freedom. We lived a deception and then it became apparent that it wrong, and now here we are.”
The KC Juneteenth Committee also sponsored a pageant for young women on May14.
