In a stunning scenario the nation’s Founding Fathers feared but not witnessed in American history, hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the United States Capitol today to block the certification of the electoral votes, a move encouraged by President Donald Trump who for weeks who stoked anger with baseless claims of election misconduct in response to his loss to President-elect Joe Biden.

“We will never concede,” Trump said to the crowd of cheering supporters. “You don’t concede when there’s theft.”

From the rally, hundreds of the supporters rushed to the Capitol where they disrupted the proceedings to recognize Biden as the next president. But Republicans in both the House and Senate had prompted a plan to overthrow Joe Biden’s general election.

Before Capitol police evacuated Congressional leaders as a safety precaution, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise had challenged the election results.

“The Constitutional process was not followed, and that’s why we’re here to object,” Scalise said.

Vice-President Mike Pence was rushed to safety because he had declined to unilaterally reject the electoral votes, a stance that displeased Trump.

Representative Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) rebutted the allegations of election fraud.

“The president has not just had his day in court, my friends, he has had more than two months in court looking for a judge to embrace these arguments.”

In less than an hour, the crowd interrupted the proceedings and Congressional leaders were told to shelter in their offices.

Sociologist Veronica Newton followed the events from Atlanta, Georgia.

“They’re reacting in a way that is status quo for whites,” Newton stated. “There’s always been white violence in response to Black progress.”

November’s general election included a record voter turnout among African Americans who overwhelmingly supported Biden for president and Kamala Harris for vice-president. In the two months since the election, Trump and his supporters have dismissed the final vote count in those states as fraudulent without presenting credible evidence. Multiple courts dismissed his team’s election lawsuits and the Supreme Court also ruled against Trump. Yet, Trump continued to spread misinformation and provoke supporters.

“It is against the law to encourage the overthrow of the government of the United States,” said Dr. Ray Winbush, Director of the Institute for Urban Research at Morgan State University.

The unfinished business of the November election was to end with the certification of the electoral votes today, hours after the Georgia Senate runoff races on Tuesday concluded with Democrat Raphael Warnock, an African American, defeated Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler and Democrat Jon Ossoff edging out Republican Senator David Perdue. A win by the Warnock and Ossoff would effectively give Democrats control of the Senate.

“We are living in Trump’s America,” sociology professor Newton explained. “And his four years gave a lot of ‘racist’ people that ammunition and empowered them and emboldened them in ways they had not had before. And one of the fears of white folks is losing power.”

As the crowd continued to swell at the Capitol, Washington D.C. police called for more assistance. Mayor Muriel Bowser imposed a 6:00 p.m. curfew, hoping to curtail more violence.
