Congressman Hakeem Jeffries Announces Bid For House Minority Leader
After two decades of leading Democrats in the House of Representatives, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced her decision to step away from her high-profile role just weeks after her husband was the target of an attack in their California home. Speculation now centers on her successor with New York Congressman Hakeem Jeffries deciding to seek the position as House Minority leader.
In a letter to his House colleagues, the 52-year-old referenced his term as the Chair of the House Democratic Caucus.
He wrote, “Building upon this track record of leadership experience and collective success, I now look to the future. In doing so, I am thankful for the invaluable opportunity I have had to learn from legendary figures like our iconic Speaker Nancy Pelosi, our resolute Leader Steny Hoyer and our historic Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, who has mentored and nurtured my leadership development from the moment I arrived in Congress.”
Middle Tennessee State political science professor Sekou Franklin says, “Jeffries would bring a lot of experience and healthy optimism. He has keen intellect and good political instincts. He did a very good job representing the Democrats in the national spotlight, and it seems as if he has boundless energy.”
If elected to the House Minority Leader position by his Democratic colleagues, Jeffries would become the first African American to lead a party in Congress.
