Happy Juneteenth!
They say “good news” travels slowly. No one would have agreed more readily than the slaves in Texas. Nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on January 1, 1863, word of freedom finally reached the state.
It was June 19th, 1865 when Union troops made it to Texas to take control and enforce the emancipation of slaves. The news gave birth to celebrations that laid the foundation for today”s observance. The word “Juneteenth” is the product of the words ‘June Nineteeth’ being run together.
Depending on where you live, Juneteenth is a partial or full state holiday in about half of the United States. There is also a campaign for Juneteenth to become a national holiday or observance. TheVillageCelebration talks with one of the organizers of the modern-day celebration in Texas.
