Jan. 6 Committee Chairman To Miss Final Hearing Due To Positive COVID-19 Test
The chairman of the Jan. 6 Committee, Congressman Bennie Thompson, will miss the televised hearing scheduled for Thursday, July 21, at 8 p.m. ET. Thompson has tested positive for COVID-19 but the hearing will continue.
Thursday’s hearing will focus on the 187 minutes after former President Donald Trump learned of the assault on the Capitol and before he made a public statement.
Rep. Adam Kinzinger told “Face The Nation on Sunday the committee is still deciding if Trump will be called to testify.
“Is there benefit in talking to somebody like Donald Trump and request he come in?” Kinzinger said. “That’s something we are negotiating back and forth and whether we want to do that and what that looks like.”
Kinzinger and Congresswoman Elaine Luria will lead the final hearing of the summer. Americans have followed the hearings with rapt interest, and according to Politico, Republican insiders say the “accumulation” of evidence is eroding Trump’s support along the party’s margins.
And there may be more information to consider between now and the midterm elections.
“This investigation is not winding down … we’re getting to the bottom of what we need to know,” Kinzinger stated.
