America Delivers Victory to the Democrats and a Stinging Rebuke to Trump
Voters stood in long lines and followed campaigns closely for the midterms, and in the end, their collective response sent a message to President Donald Trump and Republicans.
Democrats reclaimed both houses of Congress by flipping seats in the House of Representatives and Senate, making the election an historic one. A blue wave swept America from coast-to-coast and left little doubt about voters’ frustrations with Trump, the Iran War, and economic hardship.
During early voting, Melissa Givens said, “My husband and I already had to watch our budget closely, but gas prices have led us to consider getting rid of one of our cars. What’s the point of having it if we can’t afford gas?”
Another voter, who asked to remain anonymous, expressed growing frustration with what he considered corruption in the White House.
“What president makes a billion dollars or more while he’s leading the country unless he’s doing something illegal or using his job to line his pockets?” the voter questioned.
Stunning upsets in several governor’s races underscored American voters’ dissatisfaction. Republicans lost statehouses in Texas, Ohio, and Georgia with history-making elections in all three: Georgians elected America’s first Black female governor, former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. Texas chose Gina Hinajosa as its first Latina governor. And in Ohio, Amy Acton became the state’s first female governor. Wisconsin also made history, electing its first Black governor, David Crowley.
With the Democrats’ defeat of Republicans in the House of Representatives, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries will become the first Black Speaker of the House.
Jeffries said, “This is a change election. And we understand as House Democrats we need to deliver dramatic change. Things are broken. We need a Congress that puts the American people first.”
