Sniper Killed Five Officers, Injured Others
A sniper opened fire on a peaceful protest in Dallas, killing five police officers and injuring others including two civilians. After hours of negotiations, a robot carrying a bomb detonated the device which killed the sniper.
Dallas Police Chief David Brown, said the sniper talked of “killing white police officers.” During a morning news conference, Brown described the sniper as “upset about Black Lives Matter.” Chief Brown declined to elaborate on the investigation but added “no stone will be left unturned.”
Protesters gathered around the country in the hours following the police-involved killings of two African American men. A Minnesota police officer shot and killed Philando Castile during a traffic stop. Castile’s girlfriend and their four year-old daughter were in the car when the school cafeteria supervisor reached for his wallet to show his identification and the officer opened fire. Using Facebook Live, Castile’s girlfriend videotaped the entire incident.
Less than 24 hours before the Castile shooting, two officers in Baton Rouge shot and killed 37 year-old Alton Sterling as he sold CD’s in front of a convenience store. A video showed the officers restraining Sterling when one of them shot him at close range.
President Barack Obama, in Europe for a NATO Summit, said all Americans should be “concerned about the shootings.” Hours later, the President called the Dallas sniper “calculated and despicable.”
