Investigators are examining the remains of 21 bodies found in unmarked graves in Oaklawn Cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The search for victims from the 1921 Tulsa Massacre began two years ago. The area where the massacre occurred was once a prominent district filled with homes and businesses owned by African Americans, but an angry white mob destroyed the district known as Black Wall Street. Today it is home to a history center and the subject of movies, books and documentaries.

  • The Black Wall St. History Center anchors the district known as the site of one of America’s worst acts of terrorism.
  • The Red Cross responded to the crisis, offering to assist displaced families.
  • A commemorative marker stands near Vernon AME Church.
  • Visitors take a guided tour of the area.
  • The foundation of Vernon AME Church survived the 1921 devastation.
  • Several documentaries have been produced about the 1921 Tulsa Massacre, and more Americans are now aware of the violence. For more information, visit Greenwood Rising.
