Tulsa Massacre Survivor Recalls Terror
Viola Fletcher’s testimony silenced those in the hearing room as she told a Congressional committee about the terrifying violence she survived 100 years ago during the Tulsa Massacre. Fletcher, who is 107-years-old, shared the trauma she experienced as a child and its lasting effect. Her calm and composed recollection of the devastation of May 31, 1921, stunned millions of Americans who had never heard about the white mob that attacked the neighborhood known as “Black Wall Street.” Fletcher’s brother, Hughes Van Ellis, also testified before Congress.
